Model U-303 is as sturdy as the video above shows because, unlike ordinary collapsible umbrellas, its telescopic shaft, when extended, is locked by friction locks. In ordinary collapsible umbrellas, shafts are locked by small flat spring latches or ball catches. In this umbrella, no such weak parts are used for locking its shaft.

What’s more, for a shaft with friction locks to work well for many years, the shaft’s tubes cannot be made from cheap thin steel, like those of ordinary umbrellas. Therefore, tubes of the shaft of our model U-303 are machined from strong materials — high quality tool steel and aircraft aluminum — but these materials are expensive and working them is expensive too, so to make model U-303 affordable, we sell it as a kit for DIY assembly, so you may assemble it, and thus save on the cost of an assembly at a factory.
